Yulieski, Top Cuban Baseball Star
Havana, Apr 24 (Prensa Latina) Sancti Spiritus ace 3b Yulieski Gourriel has proven he is one of the best hitters and overall players of Cuba as he led various categories in the qualification round of the 45th Cuban National Baseball series.
Gourriel led Homers with 27 RBIs (tying the all-time record by Industriales former outfielder Javier Mendez), 89 Runs (tied to Yoennis Cespedes) and 11 Triples (together with Yordanis Scull).
He smashed 19 doubles, set a new record of extra-base hits (57), batted 349 and stole 21 bases, only three behind Industriales´ Carlos Tabares (24), the leader.
Undoubtedly, Yulieski Gourriel is the strongest candidate to be named Most Valuable Player.
Such possible nomination will cap off his performance inside and outside Cuba in 2005-2006, as he made the ALL-STAR game in the inaugural World Baseball Classic held in March, when the national team was runner up among the best professional players of the world.
The postseason will open with the Santiago de Cuba-Ciego de Avila and Villa Clara-Granma games on Tuesday. Isle of Youth-Industriales and Sancti Spiritus-La Habana province will play Wednesday.
