Pedro Alvarez Borrego

Chairman & CEO, Empresas Comercializadora de Alimentos (ALIMPORT)

Pedro Alvarez is Chairman & CEO of ALIMPORT, (Empresas Comercializadora de Alimentos) of the Republic of Cuba. Established in 1962 as Cuba’s leading importer and local distributor of food, drinks, raw materials for food industry, feed and agricultural products. It maintains trading relations with firms all over the world.

Total imports projected for $1.5 billion in 2005.

Chairman Alvarez was born in Alquizar, a village near Havana on August 8, 1943. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Trade (MINCEX) as office clerk in 1960. Received training as international shipping specialist in 1960s. In 1967 –1982, posted as commercial attaché and counselor in Cuban embassies in former Soviet Union and Bulgaria. Became MINCEX International Shipping and Insurance Director in 1983-90, designated MINCEX Deputy Minister 1990-98. Appointed Alimport’s Chairman & CeO in 1998. He holds University of Havana Bachelor degrees in Economics and Foreign Trade / International Shipping. He is married with two grown children.
