Havana, Jul 18 (ACN) An offensive barrage of 19 hits and the excellent mound work by right-hander Yadel Marti gave Cuba a 6-1 win over Nicaragua on Monday for its second straight victory in the Central American and Caribbean Games taking place in Colombia through July 30.
Marti was too tough for the Nicaraguans allowing just two hits and one earned run in seven innings while striking out three and walking two. The Central Americans scored their lone run in the first inning.
With 19 hits Cuba should have scored more runs, but with poor running (4 thrown out), the game did not get too far out hand.
Alexei Ramirez and Ariel Pestano went 3-for-4, Osmani Urrutia 3-3, Frederich Cepeda hit a two run homer and Yoandry Garlobo had a two run single that gave Cuba the go ahead run.
Vichyoandry Odelin pitched the final two innings for Cuba giving up one hit while Jairo Pineda took the loss for Nicaragua.
On Tuesday, Cuba plays the also undefeated Venezuela fresh off wins against Puerto Rico 6-3 and Nicaragua 3-2. Mexico got its first win on Monday by defeating host Colombia 4-2. Cuba defeated Guatemala 7-1 in its opening game on Sunday.
Overall, in the games, the island is currently on top of the medals standings after passing Mexico on Monday.
