Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to Cuban leader Fidel Castro on his 80th birthday, the Kremlin press service said on Sunday.

"Russia knows you as one of the most authoritative and eminent politicians of contemporaneity," the message said. "We value high your unfailing adherence to the strengthening of Russian-Cuban relations, which have been knitted of feelings of mutual respect and liking for decades. They are an asset we treasure and seek to develop."

"I am confident that Russia and Cuba will remain active partners targeted for the interaction in various spheres in the interests of peoples of the two countries, peace and stability," the message said.

Putin wished the soonest recovery of Castro.

Castro became ill after visiting Argentina last month and handed power temporarily on July 31 to his Defense Minister Raul Castro.

JG Comment: Notice the reference to mutual respect. That is something that you will never see in a statement from the U.S. government.
