US Blockade on Cuba Harms Europe

Cuban National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon

Havana, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) Cuban National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon asserted on Monday that the blockade imposed on his country by the United States also affects the European Union, and struggle against it is defense of EU sovereignty.

The legislative leader told Prensa Latina that although the intent is to hurt Cuba, to implement this measure is to ride roughshod over a European nation s rights.

He explained that this arbitrary policy is applied outside the United States, and it prohibits, for example that a European company sell to or buy anything from Cuba.

Alarcon called the economic pressure against his people "genocidal" and the US has applied a policy on countries that trade with Cuba, many of which are EU members, as if they were its vassals.

He regretted that as yet the regional bloc has not issued a joint declaration recognizing specifically that those coercive measures violate international law.

Only their legislators have individually expressed their opposition to the blockade, Alarcon said, after speaking in an interactive forum about the Bush Plan and intensification of the blockade on his country.
