Cuban Baseball Champs Return Home

Havana, November 23 (ACN) Cuba’s National Baseball Team returned on Wednesday to the island after coming in first place during the 26th Intercontinental Cup, which was held in China Taipei.

They dedicated the victory to the Cuban people and to President Fidel Castro, who is recovering from stomach surgery.

At the Jose Marti International Airport, the Cuban team was welcomed by the President of the Cuban Olympic Committee Jose Ramon Fernandez and the Head of the Sports Institute, Christian Jimenez.

Roberto Leon Richard, first vice president of the Sports Institute outlined that the latest victory for the island’s national sport is a source of pride for the people.

He added that 2006 has been a tough year for baseball as the players have had to stay in shape for 12 months due to the number of international competitions, recalling the baseball team’s participation in the First World Baseball Classic, the Central American and Caribbean Games and the qualifying tournament for the Beijing Olympics.

Outfielder Yoandri Urgelles, selected as the most valuable player and best defensive player for the Cup, said that the competitions were very strong due to the excellent quality of the participating teams.

Rey Vicente Anglada, manager of the Cuban squad, highlighted the level of physical and technical preparation of the opponents, among them Holland with whom Cuba played for the Gold Medal and won with a score of 6 to 3.
