Cuba will send a team of 12 chess players, led by grand master Lazaro Bruzon, whose Elo coefficient is 2,648, to the 12th Carlos Torre Repetto Memorial Chess Tournament, to be held in Mexico, Gerardo Anaya of the national chess commission told Wednesday's media.
Bruzon was the winner of the last edition of the Tournament, beating Polish grand master Michael Krasenkow in the final. The competition will run from Dec. 14 to Dec. 22 in Merida, capital of the eastern Mexico department of Yucatan.
The team's major are players are grand master Jesus Noguerias, Elo 2,554 and winner of the 1997 competition; Yunieski Quesada, Elo 2,512 winner of the 2003 competition; Walter Arencibia, with an Elo of 2,535 winner of the Capablanca Memorial open group; and the international master Jennifer Perez, Cuba's reigning champion and third place in the recent Pan-American championship, held in San Salvador.
The remaining team with their Elos is as follows: Reynaldo Vera (2,510), Silvino Garcia (2,316), Frank de la Paz (2,442) y Juan Borges (2.431), Fidel Corrales (2,496), Holden Hernandez (2,525) and Rodney Perez (2,385).
