BRASILIA, Brazil: Fidel Castro is doing "very well" and is determined to fully recover from last year's intestinal surgery that forced him from power, Cuba's foreign minister said Thursday.

"Fidel is doing very well and is disciplined in his recovery process," Felipe Perez Roque told reporters in Brasilia.

The 81-year-old Castro has not been seen in public since emergency intestinal surgery in July 2006 forced him to cede power to his younger brother. The true state of Castro's health and his future role in government remain a mystery.

Perez Roque said, however, that Castro maintains "permanent" contact with members of the government party in Cuba.

His comments echoed those he has made earlier, though in recent months, senior Cuban officials have been saying very little about Castro's condition and had stopped insisting that he would return to power.
