Florida group favors reform of Cuba embargo and travel ban

Ocober 23, 2007

The Greater Winter Haven Democratic Club passed a resolution which favors reforming the Cuba embargo and travel ban. And in a straw poll, Al Gore beat Hillary Clinton by a vote of 13 to 12.

Here is the text of the Cuba resolution:

Whereas,

the economic embargo/blockade of Cuba by the United States government has been a 46 year old policy failure which has been condemned by 183 nations at the General Assembly of the United Nations,

and,

whereas, the policies of the Bush administration limiting Cuban-Americans visits to their relatives in the island to once every three years constitute an immoral, inhuman and illegal anti-family measure, because it does not considers uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins as part of the family unit,

and,

whereas, several presidential candidates of the Democratic Party, -- Obama, Dodd and Kucinich, -- have expressed their desire to ease and/or lift said embargo/blockade of Cuba and modify the travel restrictions,

and,

whereas, freedom to travel freely to any part of the world is a very important constitutional right for all Americans,

be therefore resolved by the membership of the Greater Winter Haven Democratic Club to go on record as follows:

1. We are in favor of lifting or easing the Cuba embargo/blockade.
2. We are in favor of repealing the restrictions on Cuban-Americans to visit all their relatives in the island.
3. We are in favor of lifting all restrictions for all Americans on travel to Cuba.
