Is Bush looking for a Gulf-of-Tonkin-like incident?

Is George W. Bush and his gang of neocons looking for a Gulf Of Tonkin incident to unleash a new war against Iran? If you are that old, you will remember that the famous Gulf of Tonkin incident was used by President Lyndon B. Johnson as the excuse to unleash a war in Vietnam. The consequences, as all Americans know, were disastrous.

Here is the report from the New York Times:

U.S. Military Reports Skirmish With Iran

By Mike Nizza

Iran and the United States have been playing chicken for some time now, but reports this morning say that the game turned unusually direct on Sunday. From NBC News:

Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats harassed three U.S. Navy warships in the Strait of Hormuz Sunday, in what the U.S. military considers a “significant provocative act.”

Military officials told NBC News that two U.S. Navy destroyers and one frigate were heading into the Persian Gulf through the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz when five armed “fast boats” of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard approached a high speed, darting in and out of the formation.

Later, the White House amplified the concern and issued a warning as well. “We urge the Iranians to refrain from such provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident in the future,” said spokesman Gordon Johndroe, according to Reuters.
