Will Obama repeat Bill Clinton’s mistake about Cuba? I hope not!

With the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, hope and change is in the air.

One area where Obama can achieve very fast positive results is in the area of United States policy toward Cuba.

If some people believe the U.S. has achieved anything positive in our relations vis-à-vis Cuba, they must also believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.

Today’s Cuba embargo, the biggest U.S. policy failure of the 20th century, was codified into law only because Bill Clinton put his John Henry to the infamous Helms-Burton Act. He can never erase the fact that he got in bed with one of the most reactionary and racist senators in U.S. history. After that, I stopped voting for Bill.

Will Obama continue to travel the same wrong path as Bill Clinton?

Or will he borrow a page from JFK’s ‘Profiles in Courage’ and send a written message to the 111th U.S. Congress which says: “It is time to repeal the Cuba embargo!”

Will he get behind H.R. 188?

The ball is in President Barack Obama’s court.

Yes, I agree. At this point, all we can hope for is that he does the right thing. Continuing the mistakes of the past would disappoint a lot of people.
