"CUBA is the cradle of solidarity," affirmed Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo Méndez on his arrival in Havana at 11 o’clock last night. The Paraguayan president is on an official visit to this country.
"More than ever before, we need a Latin America that is united and full of solidarity and, in this context, Cuba has provided an example to all Latin Americans," emphasized the Paraguayan leader in a brief statement to the press. He was received at the José Martí International Airport by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, and Domingo Laíno, the Paraguayan ambassador in Cuba.
During his stay on the island, Lugo – who is accompanied by Foreign Minister Héctor Lacognata and Esperanza Martínez, minister of health and social well-being, among other members of his cabinet – will hold official talks with Cuban President Raúl Castro Ruz and meet students at the Latin American School of Medicine.
Cuba and Paraguay reestablished full diplomatic relations in 1999 and this visit is "to strengthen those ties of solidarity and friendship," underlined Lugo Méndez.
