Cuban History Chronology, Part Three

° 16 February, 1959. Fidel Castro becomes Prime Minister of Cuba.

° 17 May, 1959. Cuba enacts the First Agrarian Reform Law.

° 17 July, 1959. Osvaldo Dorticos Torrado becomes President of Cuba.

° 28 October, 159. Camilo Cienfuegos dissappears on an airplane flight bound for La Habana.

° 4 March, 1960. French freighter La Coubre explodes in La Habana harbor. C.I.A. is suspected of being involved.

° 17 March, 1960. U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower orders the CIA director to train Cuban exiles for a covert invasion of Cuba.

° 5 July, 1960. All U.S. businesses and commercial property in Cuba are nationalized.

° 19 October, 1960. U.S. government imposes a financial and economic embargo against Cuba.

° 1 January, 1961. Alphabetization campaign begins.

° 17 April, 1961. Bay of Pigs Invasion.

° 19 April, 1961. CIA's Miami mercenaries are defeated at the Bay of Pigs in 66 hours.

° 31 January, 1962. Cuba is suspended from the Organization of American States.

° 22 October, 1962. U.S. President John F. Kennedy orders a naval quarantine of Cuba, after Soviet nuclear missiles are found in Cuba.

° 28 October, 1962. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agrees to remove offensive weapons from Cuba and the U.S. promises not to invade Cuba.

° 2nd October, 1963. Second Agrarian Reform Law is enacted.

° 9 October, 1967. Che Guevara is captured and executed in Bolivia.

° 1976. Cuba's Socialist Constitution is enacted and approved overwhelmingly by voters.

° 2 September, 1976. Fidel Castro becomes President of Cuba.

° April, 1980. Mariel Boat Lift. 125,000 Cubans leave the island.

° 1991.
Dissolution of the Soviet Union negatively affects the Cuban economy. Start of the Special Period.

° February 24, 1996. Cuban Air Force jets shoot down two US-registered aircraft after they repeatedly violate Cuban air space.

° March 12, 1996. The Helms-Burton Act is enacted by the U.S. Congress. It attempt to enforce the extra territoriality of U. S. law, and is rejected overwhelmingly by practically all civilized countries.

° 28 June, 2000. Elian Gonzalez returns to Cuba.

° 12 May, 2002. Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter becomes the first U.S. president to visit Cuba.

° 14 December, 2004. Cuba becomes a member of The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).

° 31 July, 2006. Raúl Castro assumes presidential duties as Fidel Castro recovers from an emergency operation.

° 19 February, 2008. Fidel Castro announces he would not be a candidate for the position of President of the Council of States and Ministers. He retains his position as first Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba.

° 24 February, 2008. Raul Castro is elected President of the Council of States and Ministers.

° November, 2008. Cuba becomes a member of the Rio Group.

° 1 January, 2009. Cuba celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Revolution.

° 3rd June, 2009.
The Organization of American States rescinds Cuba's suspension.

° 28 October, 2009. The General Assembly of the United Nations, by a vote of 187-3, and for the 18th consecutive year, condemns the financial and economic embargo of the United States against Cuba.
