Cuba on Gulf Oil Spill Alert

Periodico 26

Havana, May 15, (RHC).- Cuba’s environmental authorities are closely monitoring the extend of oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of the Deep Water Horizon oil platform accident.

Director of the Environmental Department of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, Orlando Rey, who described the situation in the area as a disaster, said that Cuban waters have not yet been affected by the oil spill. However, he said, we need to follow it closely because of the influence of elements beyond human control, like ocean currents, winds and weather events.

At least 13 million liters of crude oil have been dumped into the sea, nearly 200,000 gallons per day, in an area, which according Rey, is one of the richest regions in the planet regarding marine biodiversity.
