Cuba Demands End of Israel’s Blockade of the Gaza Strip

Cuban News Agency

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 22 (ACN) Cuba demanded on Thursday Israel’s immediate and unconditional end of its illegal blockade of Gaza.

During a discussion at the UN Security Council under the theme “The Situation in the Middle East”, the Cuban Deputy Representative to the United Nations, Rodolfo Benitez, noted that Israel ought to allow the free flow of supplies from and to the Gaza Strip and also the permanent humanitarian access to this region “The situation in the Middle East is still complex and marked by instability and insecurity,” said the Cuban diplomat.

“Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian and Arab territories continues to be the main obstacle to a just and lasting peace in the region,” Benitez pointed out. He also condemned Israel’s attack on May 31 against a humanitarian flotilla in international waters. As a result of this attack, members of the flotilla —carrying humanitarian aid for the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip— were killed and several others were wounded.

“The international community, including the Security Council, must demand that Israel stops violating international law with impunity and complies with its international duties,” the Cuban diplomat added.

“Israeli settling activities in the occupied territories, even after the partial and temporary moratorium announced in November 2009, have remained unchanged. Currently, more than 3,700 houses are being built and more than 200 Palestinian houses have been pulled down to facilitate these illegal activities,” he denounced.

“Once again, Cuba reiterates its position in favor of a just and lasting peace for all the peoples in the Middle East that ends the occupation of all the Arab territories occupied by Israel since 1967. In addition, the Palestinian people should be guaranteed the right to self-determination through the establishment of an independent Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as its capital,” Benitez concluded.
