Were the attackers of Mr. Varela members of Vigilia Mambisa, Alpha 66 or other "freedom fighters" Miami groups? Were they admirers of Ileana 'La Loba Feroz' Ros-Lehtinen and the two Batistianos Diaz-Balart brothers, or were they merely loyal listeners of the hate-mongering spewed by Triple Feo Perez Roura at Radio Mambi?
I remember seeing pictures like that during the 1952-1958 period, when U.S. supported dictator General Fulgencio Batista ruled Cuba with an iron fist. Most of the time constitutional guarantees in the island were suspended by the despot's decrees. There were a few months when he lifted those suspensions, and Bohemia magazine would publish the photos of those who had been beaten or tortured by Batista's thugs. They looked exactly like Mr. Varela's photo.
Bohemia magazine is now not allowed to go to the only place in Cuba where people are systematically beaten and tortured: The U.S. naval base in Guantanamo, where the U.S. constitution lies in tatters.
The Batista thugs moved to Miami on January First, 1959. We have here a very clear picture about how concerned they are about human rights. By the way, when Batista was in power, I did not see the U.S. government going to an international organization and requesting that Batista be repudiated and condemned for his systematic violation of human rights. The Yankees were operating under the principle of "Batista may be an S.O.B., but he is OUR S.O.B." Yankees love ass kissers, and Batista was a good one. Fidel or Raul do not kiss Yankee ass, that is the reason they hate him.
