Remember when a professional politician from Illinois was running for the presidency? He promised us 'change you can believe in' and a “new beginning with Cuba.” As soon as he occupied the Oval Office he looked at the U.S. policies of George W. Bush, and he said: "ME TOO!"
In the last few days, the Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) has been taking place in Toronto, Canada, reports Escambray. LASA has had to go to Canada to celebrate their conference because of repeated harassments from the capitalist U.S. government. The capitalist government of the United States would not permit academics from the University of Havana to come to the United States. LASA, therefore, took their conference to Canada.
In the opinion of Robert A. Pastor, a professor of the American University and former national security adviser under the James Carter Administration, the presidency of Barack Obama has not drawn any lesson from the past [failure of U.S. Cuba policies.]
"The Obama Administration had a unique opportunity in the first six months in government to open links with Cuba, and the dialogue would have been successful, but they lost it," he said.
The reason for that is the total hatred that eleven U.S. presidents have had for Cuba.
Professor Pastor furthermore stated in the article that “there has not been, and in fact, there isn't any real US political willingness nowadays to normalize links with Cuba on an equal footing. "There has always been a demand for Cuba to do something first."
It is the capitalist United States government, the great bully of our planet, who continues with policies of aggression and harassment toward Cuba. Their imperialist arrogance prohibits them from enacting policies which would promote peace between the two neighbors.
