HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 15 (ACN) The crew of British destroyer HMS Manchester landed at the Sierra Maestra pier in Havana on Monday for the beginning of the first official visit of a British warship since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959 to Cuba.
The warship was greeted by the Cuban Navy with an honour guard carrying both Cuban and British flags, and with the band that played both national anthems.
Rear Admiral Carlos Alfonso Duque Ramos, Chief of the Revolutionary Navy and ambassador of the United Kingdom to Cuba Dianna Melrose welcomed Commander Rex Cox, who invited them to come aboard the vessel.
After a brief exchange, Duque Ramos met with Cox and other British officials at the headquarters of the Revolutionary Armed Forces Ministry, where he said to be pleased with the five-day visit of the warship.
The Manchester's visit, said Commander Rex Cox, may signal greater collaboration is at hand. The warship of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy will be available for visits on Wednesday afternoon.
