Along the Malecon: Prosecutors will link Posada Carriles to Cuba bombings

Everyone who follows closely the Cuba issue, must read this excellent post by Tracey Eaton in his blog Along the Malecon.

My question is: once it is firmly established that Luis Posada Carriles was the mastermind of terrorist acts inside Cuba in 1997, what will the administration of Barack Obama do? Will they continue to protect him or will they charge him as an international terrorist?

November 30, 1956: The Cuban people torch Batista's police headquarters in Santiago de Cuba

On that day the Cuban people took to the streets of Santiago de Cuba, in support of the expected landing of the Granma. They torched the dictator's police headquarters in Santiago.

Fidel, Raul, Camilo, Almeida, Che and 77 more courageous members of the 26th of July movement landed in Cuba on December 2, 1956, to start the final phase of Cuba's independence movement.

On January First, 1959, the U.S supported dictator flew to Santo Domingo after Ernesto 'Che' Guevara captured Santa Clara.

Cuba was finally free!

Wikileaks: The Honduras coup d'etat cables

The cables that were sent by U.S. ambassador to Honduras, Hugo Llorens, after the military coup d'etat in that Central American nation, have been published by Wikileaks.

Here is the text of two of them:

Translation:

"The military, the Supreme Court and the National Congress conspired on June 28 (2009) in what was an illegal and unconstitutional coup against the Executive."

"From our perspective there is no doubt that the rise to power of Roberto Micheletti was illegitimate," the document contains the diplomat notes that "the arguments made by proponents of the coup are often ambiguous, have no substantive validity "and, in some cases, are" overtly false."

JG: The illegal rulers of Honduras are still in power thanks to the inaction of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. They both failed to support the constitutional president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya. They looked the other way after the coup d'etat. Knowing that coup d'etat s are one of the favored acts of the imperialists, I would not be surprised if it is found that the U.S. was actively involved, behind the scenes, in this illegal grab of undemocratic power.

Uncle Sam spying from outer space

Como ya cada paraje
ocupan—nada despacio—,
ahora mandan al espacio
satélites de espionaje
que captan cualquier mensaje,
—sea o no de relevancia—
pues mantienen vigilancia
de modo secreto y vil
a más de 36 mil
kilómetros de distancia.

Las violaciones son muchas;
Cuba también las percibe:
¿Por qué nadie les prohíbe
que utilicen las escuchas?
¿Cuántas voces, cuántas luchas
hacen falta todavía
para que llegue ese día
en que fracase el canalla
y en el espacio no haya
ningún satélite espía?

A muchos hoy nos preocupa
que los servicios secretos,
se tornen tan indiscretos
que nos pongan una lupa.
Cuando un satélite ocupa
tanto diámetro amenaza
y fastidia, porque pasa
que vigilados nos vemos
aunque encerrados estemos
en el baño de la casa.

Cuba's Ron Legendario

Source: Cuban News Agency

Guantanamo (Solvision).-The worldwide prestige of Cuban rums is reaffirmed by the growing demand for Ron Legendario, whose sales show an annual 10 percent increase.

The trademark’s deputy director of marketing, Carlos Sanchez, told Ron Legendario is currently available in more than 15 European countries, among them Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Portugal and specially Spain, being the latter its biggest market.

Ron Legendario is produced in six factories across the country, three of them located in Pinar del Rio, Matanzas and Villa Clara and one in Havana, Sanchez said.

Legendario is distributed in Europe by the Valencian Legendario SL company, which is currently looking to make its way into other markets.

The trademark’s leading product is the Elixir de Cuba 7-year-aged rum, which is the richest, smoothest, sweetest and most delicate rum produced in the island.

Other Legendario spirits commercialized by the Spanish company are Dorado, Añejo, Añejo Blanco, Carta Blanca Superior and Gran Reserva 15 Years.

New statistic in international baseball games: fake runs

The Schiller Rule: “If an IBAF-sanctioned game remains tied after 10 innings, then for each subsequent half-inning, play begins with runners already on first and second base. In addition, each team can begin the 11th inning anywhere in the batting order (however, except for normal legal substitutions, they may not change the actual batting order).”

IBAF is the acronym for the International Baseball Federation.

This new rule was forced on the IBAF in 2008, before the Beijing Olympics, by Dr. Harvey W. Schiller, a U.S. citizen, who was back then the IBAF president.

Cuba did not use this illogical and crazy rule in 2008 or in 2009 in its National Baseball Series, but the island decided to use a slightly different Schiller rule in their 50th Cuban National Baseball Series, which started yesterday.

The original Schiller rule is supposed to go into effect after the 10th inning on a tied game. Cuba is using the Schiller rule after the end of the ninth inning on a tied game.

Why is this new rule being used? It is very simple. Capitalist money elites rule over just about everything in today's world, and capitalist corporations do not want to transmit a TV game that could last 20 or 25 innings, if it is tied after regulation play. In effect they are saying: screw the baseball fan, money is the only thing that is important to us.

Out of thin air, IBAF, and now even Cuba, place two runners on first and second base simultaneously. I call those two runners fake runners. They were placed there because of a very stupid new rule, and not because a baseball batter connected a hit. If any of those two fake runners reaches home plate, that is what I will call a fake run.

Right now, U.S. major league baseball (MLB), is not using the Schiller rule in either the American League or the National League, but MLB is using it in their World Baseball Classic.

Because I consider myself a baseball purist, I will not personally recognize the fake runners or the fake runs that are scored by them. Other people can choose to accept the Schiller rule. I will not.

Cuba Journal will no longer publish the box score of any baseball game where the Schiller rule is used. And I also will not attend any baseball games where this crazy rule is enforced. The Schiller rule is for people that are only interested in money. It is prostituting baseball.

Villaclara defeats Industriales 6-5 with the help of the 'fake runs' Schiller rule

Odrisamer Despaigne and Robelio Carrillo were the opening pitchers for Industriales and Villa Clara.

Industriales scored its first run, a home run by Rudy Reyes, on the bottom of the second inning. Villaclara counterattacked fast and scored a run on the top of the third, tying the game 1-1. No runs were scored by either team in the next three innings.

On the Industriales lucky-seventh, the Blue Lions had consecutive hits by Morejon and Olivares. Tabares struck out, but Torriente followed with a timely hit to left field and Morejon scored the go-ahead run. Urgelles had a single and Olivares scored. Industriales 3, Villaclara 1.

The Oranges answered right away by scoring two more runs on the top of the eighth inning, re-tying the game 3-3.

The game went into extra innings and the Schiller rule went into effect. I personally do not like the Schiller rule. I call it the 'hurry-up-and-win' rule. It is a very dumb rule and the wrong way to decide a baseball game.

All the runs that decided this game were Schiller fake runs. They were not based on player skill.

Film on Terrorism against Cuba to Premiere at Havana’s Latin American Cinema Festival

Cuban News Agency

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 27 (ACN) A film on terrorism against Cuba by American writer, journalist and filmmaker Saul Landau will have its premiere during the upcoming 32nd Latin American Film Festival that begins in Havana on December 2.

Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up? is one of the 515 films that will compete in the event and it will premiere at the Charles Chaplin movie theater on December 11 at 5:30 p.m.

The website www.cubadebate.cu announces that the film covers 50 years of terrorism against the island and particularly focuses on the case of five Cuban antiterrorists who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States for monitoring right-wing groups in South Florida that were planning and carrying out terrorist attacks against Cuba.

The film, also with the participation of Cuban documentary maker Roberto Chile, was shot in Miami, Washington and Havana and it includes photos and valuable historic documents.

It also includes interviews with notorious terrorists Luis Posada Carriles, Orlando Bosch, Jose Basulto, and others who walk the streets of Miami as free men under the protection of the US Government.

Among other recognitions, Landau has received the Emmy, George Polk, First Amendment, Letelier-Moffit and Bernardo O’Higgins awards.

Inside Baseball: This Yanqui Is Welcome in Cuba's Locker Room

Mr. Bjarkman providing play-by-play commentary for a Cuban game at the Baseball Week tournament in Haarlem, Netherlands, in July.

Wall Street Journal

NOVEMBER 9, 2010

By CHRISTOPHER RHOADS

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico—U.S. scouts at a baseball tournament here last month salivated over Cuban national team players potentially worth millions of dollars in the major leagues. To keep any of them from defecting, Cuban security restricted them to their hotel rooms between games.

But one American was allowed to visit them, coming and going as he pleased.

"The guards know me," explained Peter Bjarkman, a 69-year-old retired linguistics professor from Purdue University.

Some compare him with Ry Cooder, the American musician who brought Cuban music to the wider world, leading to the album and film the "Buena Vista Social Club." Mr. Bjarkman has made more than 40 trips to Cuba over the past 15 years, reporting on the communist country's baseball, whose talent has about the same illicit thrill as a Cuban cigar.

But others, particularly Cubans who have become U.S. citizens, see him differently—as a shill for the Cuban government.

"This guy is a friend and a defender of the revolution and the dictator himself," read a comment on one of his articles posted on a Cuban website. "Sounds like the communists have infiltrated" the U.S., wrote a reader.

Such critics consider him akin to John Reed, the controversial American journalist whose leftist sympathies allowed him into the Bolshevik inner circle to chronicle the 1917 Russian Revolution.

A few Americans knowledgeable about Cuban baseball are no longer on speaking terms with him.

"Bjarkman echoes government propaganda, so I have nothing to say about him," says Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria, a literature professor at Yale who grew up in Cuba and wrote a history of the game.

The bespectacled Mr. Bjarkman, who lives in Lafayette, Ind., with his second wife and two cats, says he's interested in Cuban baseball, not politics.

"It's a wonderful, alternative baseball universe," he says, citing the lack of commercialism, free agency and high ticket prices that mark the modern U.S. game. He says its pastoral nature recalls American baseball of the 1950s, when he was growing up following the Brooklyn Dodgers.

What is not in dispute is his access to the Cuban baseball scene and his position within it—perhaps unparalleled for an American in any field, given that the U.S. trade embargo, in place since 1962, restricts U.S. business and travel in Cuba.

He mingles freely with top Cuban players on the field before games, sometimes visiting them in their homes.

Photos of him adorn the lobby wall of the Havana hotel where he stays. Excerpts from his two books on the Cuban game have run in the Communist Party newspaper Granma.

"Everyone knows Pete here, from the baseball commissioner to the guy who sells tickets," says Ismael Sene, a retired Cuban diplomat who has a weekly baseball show on Havana television.

Mr. Bjarkman was a high-school English teacher in Hartford, Conn. in the 1960s, when he got the bug to explore Latin America.

He taught school in Colombia and Ecuador, becoming fluent in Spanish, and later got his Ph.D. in linguistics, specializing in Cuban Spanish.

But his career floundered, he says, after he arrived at Purdue as a linguistics professor in 1979. He found he had little enthusiasm for writing in his chosen field.

In the late-1980s, he began writing short histories of sports teams, often for young readers. Next came a history of Latin American baseball.

That book caught the attention of Mark Rucker, a collector of rare baseball photographs who wanted to try an illustrated book on Cuban baseball.

It was not long after a baseball strike canceled the 1994 World Series, and a disillusioned Mr. Bjarkman was eager to satisfy his baseball passion elsewhere.

The pair's biggest challenge on their research trips to Cuba in the late-1990s—beyond cows appearing on the island's unlit highways—was gaining the cooperation of Cuban authorities.

The timing was sensitive because several prominent players had recently defected to the U.S.

Cuban officials weren't pleased when the book came out in 1999. The reason: It contained two photographs of defectors, including Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez, who had become a star pitcher for the New York Yankees. Defectors didn't get official mention in Cuba.

"We never would've put those in there if the publisher hadn't requested it," says Mr. Bjarkman.

Nevertheless, the book began to circulate underground in Cuba.

Mr. Sene, the retired Cuban diplomat, passed around copies at games, attracting curious crowds. Then he introduced Mr. Bjarkman as the author, and Mr. Bjarkman's stature grew.

Officials began treating him as a regular member of the Cuban media. He appeared on Cuban television to talk baseball, indicating, he says, that he was trusted. Today, U.S. scouts consult him about Cuban players, given his unique access.

"Pete has to walk a tightrope to do that job," says Mr. Rucker, who collaborated with him on the illustrated book.

But critics think he has sacrificed credibility to maintain his standing in Cuba, such as by trashing players after they defect.

After Cuban pitcher Aroldis Chapman defected last year to sign with the Cincinnati Reds for $30 million, Mr. Bjarkman wrote about the pitcher's inconsistency and limited pitch variety and said that Mr. Chapman "had considerable trouble even qualifying" for the national team.

Before the player defected, Mr. Bjarkman had described him in his online column as a "stellar flamethrower" and a "phenom" likely to be the No. 2 starter on the Cuban team.

"Cubans who read his column are fed up with it," says Roberto Moralejo, a 30-year-old civil engineer in Miami who left Cuba 11 years ago.

He says Mr. Bjarkman ignores the hardships of the Cuban players, such as meager salaries of around $125 a month.

Mr. Bjarkman says he was trying to temper enthusiasm in the U.S. for the young pitcher by providing some balance.

Still, he admits he hates seeing Cuban players leave.

"It's a beautiful baseball experience," says Mr. Bjarkman, who acknowledges his politics lean to the left. "And I don't want to see it fall apart from U.S. teams strip-mining it for talent."

-----

JG: The reason for the animosity of Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria towards Peter C. Bjarkman is extremely easy to see. I have read Mr. Echevarria's book. It is mediocre and boring. It does not come even close to the excellence of Peter C. Bjarkman's "A history of Cuban Baseball 1864-2006." Mr. Echevarria is a businessman. Bjarkman is a true words expert and a connoisseur. He recognizes good baseball when he sees it!

This year, during the 2010 MLB playoffs, the Tampa Bay Rays wanted me to fork over $40.00 for a bleachers seat ticket. They also wanted to add a $6.00 convenience charge to the insult and injury. The $6.00 translates as: "We want to f***k you even more!"

My response was: "GO F***K YOURSELVES!"

Fake Cuban Music

The Lost Cuban Trios of Casa Marina is a CD about fake Cuban Music. It is produced under the label of Ahí Namá, which is not a Cuban CD label. It is an American [USA] label. The Americans are fraud masters, so I am not surprised.

The Trio Zamora and the Trio Mélodico ARE NOT Cuban Trios. After their names Ahi Nama places (D.R.) Most people will say that is an abreviation for Dominican Republic.

If you go to the Spanish Wikepidia and you type Trio Zamora, nothing comes up. Instead Spanish Wipedia responds: Did you mean Toro Zamora? I think the poor toro will probably feel insulted.

The same thing happens with Trio Mélodico. Nothing shows up.

This CD was "recorded" in 1958. On that year the great majority of the Cuban people were actively fighting the dictatorship of U.S. supported dictator Fulgencio Batista.

I will not even assign one star to this fake Cuban music CD. Skip it! Don't buy it!

Fidel Castro: Obama is More Dangerous Now

Havana, Cuba, Nov 27.- The leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, said U.S. President Barack Obama is more dangerous now that a competition has emerged in the United States to see who is more of a rightist.

Obama is smart but he is more dangerous at present because he, too, is going to compete now, the revolutionary leader said during a meeting with Latin American intellectuals, according to an article published in the Granma newspaper Friday.

He is thinking about what happened to (William)Clinton and (Ronald)Reagan, who had lost popularity but then rose in the polls when they ventured into confrontations, Fidel stated.

Fidel Castro expressed that it is not forbidden to be optimistic, but he prefers to be realistic toward the current international situation, now marked by the South-North Korea conflict and in the midst of a profound economic crisis.

The leader of the Cuban Revolution recalled the statements of Michel Chossudovsky, editor in chief of the Global Research website, regarding the fact that NATO -- Germany and other member countries -- have tactical nuclear weapons.

The United States has a government hated by the most diverse array of people in the world, Fidel Castro said, mentioning the feelings of affront of the Japanese people regarding the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (Prensa Latina)

Barack Obama's "new Cuba travel policies" turned out to be another turd

Do you guys/gals remember when the New York Times reported the following on August 16th of this year?

"The Obama administration is planning to expand opportunities for Americans to travel to Cuba, the latest step aimed at encouraging more contact between people in both countries, while leaving intact the decades-old embargo against the island’s Communist government, according to Congressional and administration officials."

"The officials, who asked not to be identified because they had not been authorized to discuss the policy before it was announced, said it was meant to loosen restrictions on academic, religious and cultural groups that were adopted under President George W. Bush"

Barack Obama's first turd was when he announced a "new beginning" with Cuba.

An artistic representation of El Tocororo

Tocororo cantando,Cuban Trogon singing

The Tocororo bird is in danger of extinction.

Because his red, blue, and white colors, the same as the Cuban flag, he was chosen as the national bird.

The Tocororo bird can be found in mountainous regions in Cuba, mainly in Sierra Maestra mountain range, in the eastern province of Granma and Santiago de Cuba. It can also be seen in the highest parts of Sierra del Escambray, in Santi Spiritu province and with smaller frequency in Sierra de los Organos in Pinar del Rio. It cannot live in captivity. He is fed of wild fruits, mainly Aguacatillo. He nests in the holes of the tree trunks.

17th World Festival of Youth and Students

The festival will take place in Pretoria, South Africa from December 13th to the 21st, 2010.

Appeal to the Youth and Students of the World

Youth has always been a vital force in the development of societies. With natural creativity, will of change, transformation and strength, the struggle of youth for freedom, peace and social transformation, for the right to education, employment, democratic rights and peace has always had a significant role in the general struggle for a fair and peaceful world. This is demonstrated by the past, but also by the present where big demonstrations of students, of young workers and of youngsters in general are a vanguard of resistance against exploitation, withdrawal of rights, imperialist plunder of resources, racism, sexual discrimination, colonialism, fascism, military interventions and war, and for the survival of the Human being. We call upon the youth to continue these struggles.

In the same time when imperialism dominates the World, in the framework of one of the deepest structural crisis of the capitalist system, the situation of the youth is worsening. This is very clear in the increasing number of young people unemployed or working under precarious working relations as the profits of the big economic groups keep increasing, the number of people resisting increases every day, in all countries, where the youth and people are victims of the imperialism and bravely resist, as well as in many countries under sanctions, blockades and occupation. This crisis shows the historical limits of this system and that there is more potential for stronger struggles against it and changes in the balance of the different forces in the world. We call all the youth to line up in our struggle of resistance against the exploitation of the peoples and environment, for the true satisfaction of peoples’ needs. In times when imperialist forces increase militarization of the World, by implementing more military bases, by competing against each other for markets and natural resources, increasing the fire power of armies and their budgets, developing high technology weapons, and devastating the environment and natural resources, proving the eco-predatory character of imperialism, Eath has become a more dangerous place for youth to live. Alongside with the empowerment of imperialist structures, like NATO, EU, AFRICOM and other organizations, imperialism is everyday more aggressive towards progressive, democratic and communist organizations, which demands from us to reinforce the struggle for peace. The increase of the military offensives and provocations against all progressive governments and people in Latin America and the Caribbean, the persecution of the youth and students’ movement in Colombia, and the progressive and anti-imperialist forces and youth organizations in Eastern European countries, the equalizing of communism and Nazism, the attacks against UJSario Western Sahara and youth and people, the crimes against the youth and people of Palestine by the Zionist Israeli occupation sponsored by imperialism, the occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan, the continuation of the occupation of Cyprus, the oppression of indigenous people, among many other examples, demonstrate that the attempt of imperialism to destroy democratic rights is not only an isolated event in one country, but is indeed one of the key elements of the imperialist offense and strategy.

Youth struggled, struggles and will keep struggling for public, free, quality and democratic education, for right to employment with full labour rights, for democratic rights, for the right to exclusively free access to health, sport and culture, for the protection of the environment, for sovereignty, for a decent life, for friendship, solidarity and peace among all peoples of the world. There is no imperialist campaign, no anti-scientific school book, no industry of culture, no nationalist feeling, racial prejudice, imperialist promoted secessionist movement, ethnic or religious conflict promoted by imperialism that can ever stop the struggle of the youth and all the workers against exploitation of man by man from happening and being victorious.

The 17th World Festival of Youth and Students will be held having before it a rich past of WFYS experience, particularly the experience from the 16th WFYS, held in Caracas - Venezuela, in August 2005, which success represents a big responsibility and a big hope for the 17th WFYS, that will happen in Pretoria - South Africa, in December, 2010.

The 17th WFYS in South Africa states and underlines the anti-imperialist character of the World Festivals of Youth and Students. The firm confrontation with imperialism was the key element for WFYS resistance, with an important contribution from the progressive and socialist countries. The international, mass participation of the youth and students and political-cultural characteristics are elements that we should reinforce, alongside with the solidarity with South Africa resistance to any type of imperialist intervention, building a multicultural and multinational country of peace, sovereignty and social justice, now that the brave struggle of the South African people and youth have broken the grids of apartheid.

Furthermore, organizing the 17th WFYS in the African continent is a sign of support to the African youth, who so bravely struggles against the new waves of imperialism, whether it is on its military expression, by implementing military bases all over the continent (particularly the dangerous US project of AFRICOM) and the growing military presence in Somalia; or on its political and economic expression by attempting to force all countries to bend to the imperialist wills, punishing with sanctions all those who refuse to accept this new sort of neo-colonialist offense against their countries and peoples.

The World Festival of Youth and Students is collectively organized and represents the millions of youngsters who struggle for a peaceful future without imperialism and its structures. Its democratic process, since the first preparatory moment until the closing ceremony, is unique and should be preserved and deepened, in order to be even more connected with the concrete everyday struggles in the countries of all the world of the youth and students.

We call upon all progressive youth and students to join the struggle for peace and against imperialism, and work actively from now to strengthen the 17th WFYS in their countries and participate in the Festival in South Africa.

Let’s defeat imperialism, for a world of peace, solidarity and social transformation!

Let us work for a successful 17th World Festival of Youth and Students in South Africa, in December 13 - 21, 2010.

Tumult and Triumph in Black and White

The New York Times

November 11, 2010

By KEN JOHNSON

Too bad Fidel Castro cannot come to New York to see “Cuba in Revolution,” an intensely absorbing exhibition at the International Center of Photography. It would warm his heart and make him pine for the glory days of the late 1950s and early ’60s, when his tiny, swashbuckling band of soldier intellectuals overthrew the corrupt government of Fulgencio Batista and prevailed over the forces of corporate capitalism and organized crime. The improbable, undeniably stirring tale of the rise and triumph of the Fidelistas is told by 180 pictures made by 30 photojournalists, including native Cubans like Raúl Corrales and Alberto Korda and international stars like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Burt Glinn.

Organized by Brian Wallis, the center’s chief curator, and Mark Sanders, a guest curator, the exhibition pictures the revolution in black and white, figuratively — Batista bad, revolution good — as well as literally.

Batista was so bad that the initially supportive Eisenhower administration disowned him, and he ultimately fled Cuba with $300 million. His Havana was a sinkhole of moral turpitude.

Corporations like ITT and Standard Oil and criminal luminaries like Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano made Batista their puppet. Tourists came to gambol and gamble at Las Vegas-style casinos. Prostitution and drug trafficking were rife. Meanwhile, most of Cuba’s rural population remained dirt poor, and dissidents were treated with extreme prejudice.

Mr. Castro and his merry men were correspondingly good. They were popular, heroic liberators and, not just incidentally, wonderfully photogenic in their proto-hippie guerilla regalia. From their hide-outs in the mountains to their triumphal processions into Havana and other cities, the revolutionaries come across like stars in a Hollywood epic. Victory over C.I.A.-backed Cuban exiles in the Bay of Pigs invasion only enhanced the revolution’s image, and the turn to the Soviets leading to the Cuban missile crisis is sympathetically understood in light of the United States’ clear determination to restore capitalist order, if not democracy, to Cuba. Going by this exhibition, it seems the worst thing the new leadership did was to ban the Beatles.

These almost metaphysically polarized conditions and the events they incited made Cuba an irresistible magnet for photographers, whose pictures appeared in newspapers and magazines around the globe.

In this context almost every image is loaded with moral and political resonance. There’s the Ugly American tourist in a Batista-era photograph by Constantino Arias: a fleshy, middle-aged guy comically posing in a droopy bathing suit and sombrero, wielding a liquor bottle in each hand. In contrast, you have a beautiful, sad, poor little girl clutching a crude wooden doll in a 1959 photograph by Korda, who would go on to become Mr. Castro’s personal photographer. That child could be the beleaguered soul of the soon-to-be uplifted people.

The curators point out in a wall text that many images of the victorious rebels were but thinly veiled propaganda. Among the most stirring, unabashedly hagiographic images is “La Caballería” (“The Cavalry”) by Corrales, who would become an official photographer for the Castro regime. Mounted on horses and brandishing Cuban flags whipped by the wind, a band of victorious revolutionaries approaches on a dirt road in a composition that could have been painted by a 19th-century academician. It might be Cuba’s “Washington Crossing the Delaware” or “Liberty Leading the People.”

When it comes to political symbolism, the champ is the photograph of a movie-star-handsome Che Guevara in his beret that Korda called “Heroic Guerilla.” Several versions of the image are in this show. And a whole room is devoted to Freddy Alborta’s 1967 photographs of the assassinated Guevara’s corpse, images that seem inspired by Mantegna’s 15th-century painting “The Lamentation Over the Dead Christ.”

A number of decidedly more lighthearted pictures show Nikita S. Khrushchev entertaining Mr. Castro in the Soviet Union in 1963 and ’64. In one, Mr. Castro kneels to snap a group portrait of Khrushchev and eight members of his family arranged against a strangely barren landscape. In another, the two strongmen, dressed in heavy overcoats and fur hats, converse in a snowy forest. Inadvertently, these images of ruthlessly dictatorial rulers of supposedly egalitarian systems hanging out together bring to mind the once-revolutionary ruling-class pigs at the end of “Animal Farm.”

What does all this mean? Why does the exhibition present such a positive image of the revolution? It was, after all, a violent overthrow. Were there no more troubling images to be found of life under Mr. Castro’s iron-fisted leadership than those of young people playing forbidden rock music, as in a 1966 picture by José Figueroa?

From 1965 to 1967 Mr. Figueroa made a series of group portraits of his middle-class family, which was progressively reduced in number as, one by one, its members emigrated to the United States. A wall text observes that the series “captures an inherent contradiction at the heart of the Cuban Revolution, whereby its ideals both forged a nation and divided a people.” Today, the text notes, more than 1.2 million people of direct Cuban descent live in the United States. You don’t have to be anti-Castro to wonder at the paucity of pictures representing the other side of the story.

Be that as it may, this show is as gripping as photojournalist exhibitions get, and it will be especially so for any American who came of age during those strange and frightening decades of the cold war.

Ni un día de Paz para Cuba

Noviembre 22, 2010

Corporate capital has pulled the plug on America

The conventional wisdom is that corporate capital has an enduring commitment to science, education, transportation, health and nutrition, public amenities, urban development, equal opportunity, and more. Business executives are considered solid citizens as well as savvy investors. We are told that they are interested in the modernization of the state, economy, and society as well as their own enterprises.

There was at one time a grain of truth to this portrayal of the corporate class. Coming out of World War II, a broad alliance, with U.S. corporations occupying a dominant position, expanded the public sector, trained a skilled workforce, steadily improved wages and social benefits, renovated the infrastructure, built a national system of interstate highways, invested in public education, struck down the most egregious barriers of racial exclusion, and promoted vigorous economic growth.

Corporate capital's principal reason for being was still profit-making, but its profit-making strategy was tethered to the modernization of the domestic economy, state and society.

To a degree, it was a win-win situation insofar as both the corporations and the people gained, even though very unequally, from this arrangement. The socialist Michael Harrington, in an analysis of this era, wrote:

"The welfare state was thus not simply the result of socialist and liberal conscience and working class struggle. It was also a function of a capitalist socialization process, a way of allowing the system to absorb the enormous productivity of the new forms of collective labor."

But the arrangement didn't last. By the mid-1970s, this commitment of significant sections of the corporate elite began to fray, and then in the decades that followed it came apart at the seams, as the transnational corporations, with the assistance of right-wing extremists occupying powerful positions in government, drastically and negatively restructured the state, economy and society.

By the first decade of this century, the effects were apparent.

On one side we have experienced a historically unprecedented shift of wealth and power to the moneybags on Wall Street and across America.

On the other side, we have seen the deterioration of infrastructure, the destruction of the social safety net, the undermining of the public school system, the decay of urban and rural communities, the privatization of public assets, the growth of poverty and inequality, the hollowing out of the manufacturing sector and massive loss of jobs, the dismantling of regulations on corporate misbehavior, the lowering of workers' wages, the lifting of barriers inhibiting international capital flows, the imposition of unfair trade agreements, and a faltering - now stagnant - domestic economy.

It isn't pretty!

What explains the change of heart of big sections of the transnational corporate class? Why did they pull the plug? Are they meaner than capitalists and wealthy families of the previous era? Perhaps, but that really doesn't answer the question.

The explanation in my view lies in the evolution, dynamics and profit imperatives of the world economy over the past three decades.

The markets, supply of exploitable labor, and investment strategies of U.S. transnational corporations are worldwide in scope now.

Their production sites stretch across regions and time zones, thanks to new technologies that, in effect, reduce time and distance (think Internet).

That doesn't mean that domestic production sites, consumption markets and workforces are of no consequence, but their importance to the transnational masters of the world is far less today. Unlike in the early postwar period, the corporate planning unit is a world economy, now cluttered with powerful foreign-based corporations and new state competitors like China and India.

This being so, the commitment of major sections of the transnational elite to a people-friendly public sector, a vibrant national economy and a modern society has waned in recent decades. In fact, this [capitalist] elite is turning the state into its personal ATM machine and a military juggernaut to enforce its will at home and abroad. It's not an exaggeration to say that this social grouping has become a parasite sucking the life out of our government, economy and society, while living in bubbles of luxury, racial exclusion and class privilege and exploiting labor globally.

This new reality has ominous implications for the future of the American people.

It doesn't alter the strategic necessity of defeating right-wing extremists, whose plan is to regain complete control of the federal government in 2012.

Why? Because, in the midst of the deepest economic crisis since the Great Depression, this supposedly "neo-populist" political bloc (tea partiers and their far-right Republican allies) is leading the charge for, doing the dirty work of, that grouping of the transnational corporations.

So we have to keep at it - maybe make some adjustments to take into account the objective basis for broadening and deepening the people's coalition. Let's also keep in mind: the stakes couldn't be much higher, both now and in 2012.

Matt Taibbi's definition of Goldman Sachs

Apr 05, 2010 3:58 PM EDT

"The first thing you need to know about Goldman Sachs is that it's everywhere. The world's most powerful investment bank is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money."

Read the complete Matt Taibbi article in Roling Stone magazine.

Goldman Sachs Alumni:

Hank Paulson, Treasury Secretry of George W. Bush.

Robert Rubin, Treasury Secretary of Bill Clinton.

John Thain, Chairman and CEO of CIT Group.

Robert Steel, CEO of Wachovia Corporation.

New Jersey Governor John Corzine.

The Rolling Stone article gives a 100% accurate picture of how U.S. capitalists operate: keep those fees coming in by screwing everyone. There are suckers who are waiting to be born every second of the living day.

Here is what Taibbi says in the last paragraph about U.S.A.: "It's a gangster state, running on gangster economics, and even prices can't be trusted anymore."

Miami sycophants are upset with Israel

The ass-kissers and the boot-lickers of the Yankee imperialists in the Miami area are upset with Israel.

Here is what JTA, a Jewish news organization, is reporting:

November 23, 2010

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen helped shut down a recent diplomatic opening between Israel and Cuba, according to Politico.

Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), the incoming chairwoman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, let Israel know she was displeased with the possible rapprochement, Politico reported. The congresswoman is a Cuban exile and violently opposed to Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

In an interview with The Atlantic reporter Jeffrey Goldberg, Castro defended Israel and Jews and criticized Iran, leading to praise from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a friendly letter from President Shimon Peres.

Ros-Lehtinen complained to Israel about the warm reception to Castro's words, leading to an apologetic call from Netanyahu, Politico reported.

“I just said look, this guy has been an enemy of Israel, just because he said something that a normal person would say -- after 50 years of anti-Israel incitement, it’s one phrase from an old guy who doesn’t even know where he’s standing,” Ros-Lehtinen told Politico.

FREDERICH CEPEDA IS BACK!

JG: Frederich will be playing with his team, the Gallos of Sancti Spiritus. Welcome back, Slugger!

One courageous Cuban journalist

Osviel Castro Medel has written a very good article titled "Los nocivos silencios del caso Frederich Cepeda." If you read Spanish, I encourage you to read it.

Because there is no freedom of the press in Cuba, all press organs are state controlled, we owe Osviel a debt a gratitude for trying to bring light to this sorry incident of authoritarianism in Cuban Baseball.

It is now very clear that Higinio Velez is the culprit for banning Frederich Cepeda from playing in Cuban baseball. He is more interested in control than having the best Cuban players in the baseball diamond. How sad, but Cuban baseball is going like the country, downhill.

Update: 10:12 a.m. November 23, 2010: Frederich Cepeda is back and will be playing with the Gallos of Sancti Spiritus!

Mayor of London to Bush: Stay Away From U.K. or Face Possible Arrest

And the mayor of London has sent a message to former President George W. Bush to stay away from Britain and other European countries during his book tour because he could face arrest as a war criminal for authorizing the use of torture. Mayor Boris Johnson wrote about the possible arrest of Bush in the Daily Telegraph. He wrote, "Of course, we are told this scenario is unlikely. Dubya is the former leader of a friendly power, with whom this country is determined to have good relations. But that is what torture-authorising Augusto Pinochet thought. And unlike Pinochet, Mr. Bush is making no bones about what he has done." The former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet was arrested in London in 1998.

Béisbol Cubano: Top-down authoritarianism?

The silence from the top leaders of Cuban Baseball continues. Don't they realize how much they are hurting our beloved island and its national passion, el béisbol Cubano?

Only five days remain for the inaugural game of the 50th National Baseball Series on November 28th. Will it be a golden series or a ruined series? No news and no explanations have been offered to the public in Cuba as to what has happened to Frederich Cepeda. Arrogance does not make for very good policies.

If you were to go to a dictionary and look for the definition of democracy you will see that it is rule by the people, rather than the rule of money, (as in the U.S.A.), or the rule of the top commissars of a failed Stalinist USSR regime.

Ideology and dogma do not belong in the baseball diamond or any other sport. Those who are good baseball players have the right to play. I hope that Cuba stops all this nonsense of applying political correctness to our beloved game.

Cuban Baseball fans inside and outside the island should be the ultimate judge and jury.

Do you think that you will ever see a list published with the names of the big capitalist corporations and the amounts that they have received from taxpayers?

There is a great deal of dissatisfaction and disappointment among Cuban baseball fans, both inside and outside the island, in regards to what has happened to Frederich Cepeda. Are we witnessing another typical Cuban Stalinist purge?

Frederich Cepeda, who is one hell of a good baseball player, was removed from the Team Cuba roster to the XVII International Cup and he does not appear in the roster for the Sancti Spiritus Gallos to the 50th National Baseball Series, (see FCBA article titled Equipo Sancti Spíritus.)

BaseballdeCuba.com seems to be pointing the finger toward Higinio Vélez, the current Czar of Cuban Baseball.

Translation: “No one was slapped or hit; there was no fight; it has been published in the Internet that Martin (Edward Martin and I) were waiting at the door [of the hotel] because [Fredereich Cepeda] had left the hotel and had returned late; they also spoke about a big physical fight! Nothing like that. Cespedes and Despaigne can talk about that. I can not give arguments on the case because it is a complex situation."

Sorry, Señor Vélez, but that is not a proper explanation as to why Frederich Cepeda is no longer playing in El Béisbol Cubano. What we fans want to know is, did you Señor Velez ban Frederich Cepeda from Cuban Baseball? If you did, you owe us a better explanation, with the true facts, about what has happened to Frederich Cepeda.

Over Two Million Tourists Visited Cuba by October

Cuban News Agency

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 20 (ACN) The National Statistics Office (ONE) announced that, for the first time in the history of Cuban international tourism, two million visitors arrived in the island in the January-October period.

By the end of last month, 2,068,409 foreign tourists arrived in Cuba, which represents a 3.4% increase compared to the previous year.

In October alone, the number of visitors was 164,675 — a 15.5% increase compared to 2009 and 32.3% more than in 2008.

This is the seventh consecutive year that Cuba registers two million foreign tourist arrivals or more.

The main markets continue to be Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Mexico, Argentina and Russia. Currently, the Tourism Ministry is carrying out a process to improve efficiency that includes new strategies for each of the traditional, emerging and developing markets. ONE announced that on November 25, it will issue its publication “Tourism. Arrival of Foreign Visitors” with data on the tourist sector in October and in the first ten months of the year as well as other interesting information.
