Ecuador's President Rafael Correa: I asked for a pistol to defend myself

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa

On September 30, 2010, evil forces tried to overthrow the President of Ecuador. Who are those evil forces? Ask yourself the following question: what country in the Western Hemisphere LOVES coup d'etat s?

Ignacio Ramonet recently interviewed Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa about the events of that day.

Rafael Correa: Do you understand that at eight o'clock the police went on strike, and at nine o'clock there have already been mass looting in Guayaquil ...? All that was induced, clearly. They tried to take over television channels, they took the airport. Later, despite the violent acts, they asked for amnesty for all the unruly persons. The opposition, gathered at a hotel in Quito, celebrating the fall of the government and ... When I was captured ... and later intelligence reports indicate to me that was planned three weeks in advance. What altered the whole program was that I went to the Quito Regiment and was captured. But the idea was to create chaos for two or three days, until the government fell. We have no doubt it was a coup attempt, conspiracy, of destabilization.

Then they had been instructed that 'the President was here, catch him! "They blocked the convoy, entered, and we realized it was something different. Again, shouting 'Death to the communists', 'off Cuba', 'off Venezuela', 'Viva Lucio Gutierrez' ... Then we realized that this was a political trap.

Then [my escort] brings me to the third floor, which was the safest place, and closes the door. I still had reduced security, four or five people who were willing to give their lives for the President. At one point, [the coup promoters] attempt to enter the third floor to knock down the door, I had to, at that point ask, for a gun to defend myself ... Although I do not know how to shoot, I was not going to allow those blood thirsty men to assassinate me.

JG: The Yankee imperialists were extremely sad that the military coup failed. They were successful in Honduras, but failed in Ecuador. This is the 'change you can believe in' that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton want for Latin America. Capitalists hate governments that defend the interests of the people, rather than the interests of multinational corporations.
