On Friday, Barack Obama issued an executive order about new Cuba regulations that, after very close examination, continues the series of weak and timid measures that fail to recognize what is it that is really wrong with U.S. policy toward Cuba: leaving intact the U.S. blockade/embargo of Cuba.
Apparently to Barack Obama, the vote of last October 26th at the United Nations, which by a tally of 187-3 condemned the U.S. blockade/embargo of Cuba is not very important to him. Ignoring the U.N vote is not going to make the worldwide condemnation of the U.S. go away.
People to people exchanges do not amount to a hill of beans. Barack Obama has, with this executive order, started his 2012 presidential campaign by trying to attract votes among the Cuban-American community of Florida. And he knows very well that the right-wingers of Miami have very, very, deep pockets. He is a typical capitalist politician: he will do anything to get reelected.
Being able to fly to Havana from Tampa is very nice. We will no longer have to put up with surly Cuban-American right-wingers at Miami International Airport. People in Tampa are more civilized than in Miami.
The travel to Cuba environment will be continued to be dominated by a few capitalist travel monopolies which charge huge sums of money for travel to Cuba, when on the opposite side there is huge competition to travel to the Dominican Republic with very low fares. Cuban airlines will still not be able to fly to the United States, and Cuban products like its excellent rum and cigars will still be prohibited from entering the United States.
Obama is not really interested in being a good neighbor. He wants to go back to the corrupt democracy that existed in Cuba before 1959, when Cuba was a colony of the United States. Yankee imperialists can not stomach a Cuba that is free and sovereign. They are innately evil and perverse.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Obama's famous 'new beginning' with Cuba continues to be a huge fraud. The Cuba embargo remains intact. I hope that the Cuban people and government continue resisting “The Emperor of the World.”
He fooled me once. He will not fool me in 2012, as long as he continues promoting and enforcing that infamous monstrosity called the Helms-Burton Act. Lift the embargo and join the community of civilized nations.
Writing-in 'None of the Above' for President and U.S. Senator, here I come!
