Bay of Pigs: Fidel Castro's Communique to the Cuban People, April 15th, 1961

Cubans will celebrate in two months the 50th anniversary of their victory over the mercenary forces which attempted to invade the island and were paid and directed by the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States. It would constitute the first military defeat of Yankee imperialism in the history of Latin America.

There were four official communiques issued to the Cuban people by Cuba's Commander in Chief and Supreme Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.

I have taken the liberty of translating the first one. The other three will follow, time permitting. Any errors are mine. I will first give you the English translation, followed by the original Spanish document, as published by Granma in their special website which was established to commemorate the anniversary.

April 15th, 1961

Fidel's official communique to the Cuban people

At six in the morning today, April 15th, 1961, B-26 aircraft of U.S. manufacture, simultaneously bombed places in the city of Havana, San Antonio de los Baños and Santiago de Cuba, according to reports received until the present time.

Our anti-aircraft batteries opened fire on the attacking planes, hitting several of them, one of which withdrew engulfed in flames.

Revolutionary Air Force (FAR) planes took off immediately in pursuit of the enemy.

Until the time of writing this report, we are continuing to hear numerous explosions, as a result of an ammunition dump having been set ablaze near the FAR airfield. Until this moment, no deaths have been reported, although many have been wounded. The attack came in a surprisingly and and cowardly way.

Our country has bee the victim of an imperialist criminal aggression which violates all the rules of international laws.

The Cuban delegation to the United Nations, has received instructions to directly accuse the U.S. government as the guilty party in this aggression against Cuba.

The order has been given to mobilize all the combat units of the Rebel Army and the National Revolutionary Militias. All the command centers have been placed on a state of alert.

If this air strike was the prelude to an invasion, the country stands ready to fight and destroy with an iron fist any force attempting to land on our land.

The people will be fully informed of everything. Every Cuban should occupy the position that corresponds with their military units and workplaces without interrupting production, either in the literacy campaign or in any single revolutionary work.

The Fatherland will stand firm and resist calmly any enemy attack, confident of victory.

“Fatherland or Death”

“We Shall Win”

Fidel Castro Ruz

“Patria o Muerte”

“Venceremos”

Fidel Castro Ruz
