(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement today on reports that the Cuban regime intends to seek a 20-year prison sentence for U.S. contractor Alan Gross. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“Today’s news is yet another wakeup call that the United States cannot negotiate with ruthless dictators.
“It is outrageous enough that Alan Gross has been forced to endure wrongful imprisonment in Cuba for more than a year. It is unthinkable that the tyrants would now want to extend this sham for 20 more.
“This Administration’s insistence on continually reaching out to the Cuban tyranny and seeking to ease restrictions is rewarding the despotic Castro brothers while at the same time undermining U.S. interests and security.”
