Japan to hand out iodine

The U.N.'s Interantional Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been notofied by Japan's goverment that it will distribute iodine to the people who live near the two nuclear power plants affected by the massive Friday earthquake.

This means that deadly radiation has been released into the atmosphere after today's explosion at one of the plants. Iodine can be used to help protect against thyroid cancer in the case of radioactive exposure in a nuclear accident.
