The Pinar del Rio Tobacco Growers and the Granma Stallions both brought their bats in the opening round of the Cuban semi-final playoffs today.
Western Region Semifinals: Pinar del Río leads the series 1-0
The Growers ripped 21 hits in their 13-3 opening round slaughter of the Cienfuegos Elephants.
Norberto Gonzalez was torched for 6 runs and couldn’t get past the second inning.
Vladimir Baños pitched a complete game victory for the Growers, withstanding sloppy fielding by the Growers that produced four errors.
Only one of the three runs he gave up was earned as Baños limited the Elephant bats to four hits. One of those was a solo homerun from the king of bop, José D. Abreu.
The Growers jumped out to a 11-1 lead after just three innings and put it in cruise control for the remainder of the game.
David Castillo was the lightening rod from the leadoff spot, contributing four hits that allowed him to cross the plate three times.
Lorenzo Quintana also crossed the plate three times, including getting three hits, one of them a homerun. He drove in four runs.
