Granma, the official organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, reports that Ciego de Ávila has been given this year the honors of hosting the celebrations for the 26 of July celebrations.
On July 26, 1953, a group of cuban patriots, under the leadership of Fidel Castro Ruz, led an armed attack on the Moncada Army barracks in Santiago the Cuba. It failed, but it marked the begginning of the last chapter in the overthrow of Yankee supported puppet General Fulgencio Batista.
On January First, 1959, Cuba would finally achieve its political independence and freed itself of the domination and control by its northern neighbor.
