After the disastrous eight years of the George W. Bush presidency, the American people people were looking for significant and real change in 2008. Along comes Professor Harold Hill and tells the electorate that if they put him in charge of America's marching band he would deliver to them a beautiful song called “Change You Can Believe In” and that things would be different and that happy days would be here again.
Do you remember the itinerant sellers of “Snake Oil” in the Old Wild West and do you remember also the promises of another inexperienced “charmer” in 1960, who also had a good looking wife, and who promised the nation to “Get America Moving Again“? He gave us the Bay of Pigs instead.
The problem with American voters is that they belong to that group of people called “Suckers Born Every Minute” so aptly described by P.T. Barnum.
They swallowed Barack H. Obama's bait with gusto, including myself!
The first mistake he made was to put Hillary Clinton at Foggy Bottom. I knew right then and there that Barack Obama was going to be a category five disaster.
Next came the Health Care Reform Bill. Did Barack Obama get behind a public option, which is what the people wanted? No. He decided to sell to us more snake oil. He unabashedly promoted Corporate Health Care. Our health care system is now in worse shape, and more expensive, than when Obama assumed office. Health care corporate profits keep on rising while the people “eat cake.”
He did not end the war in Iraq, and adopted the Afghanistan fiasco and quagmire as his own, because we have to promote “America's Interests” and help those poor folks at the Military Industrial Complex with even higher profits. Gordon Gecko told us that “Greed Is Good.” Barack Obama tells us every day that “War Is Even Better.”
Last but not least is the Cuba issue. What was the first place he visited in Miami? The assembled folks of the Cuban American National Foundation, where he unveiled yet another bottle of snake oil called “A New Beginning With Cuba.” What was the new beginning? Keep on promoting and enforcing the cruel and genocidal blockade/embargo against the people of Cuba. We hate those evil commies in that Caribbean island!
In the fiscal front he has continued the Bush tax cuts for the top 0.10% of the wealthiest taxpayers and created a new gimmick called TARP to help his buddies in Corporate America, the banks and Wall Street.
And after innumerable “programs,” the unemployment rate for working class Americans remains today at 9.1%, while thousands of Americans loose their homes due dishonest capitalist mortgage scams.
But, wait, if you send me $19.95 right now I will send you not one, but two bottles of “new and improved” snake oil. All you have to do is vote for BHO in November of 2012.
Will we ever learn?
