Going Postal

I recently stopped by at my excellent local library and picked up a couple of circulating weekly issues of Linn's Stamp News.

The headline on page one totally shocked me: The Trump Administration is withdrawing the USA from the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a group of 192 nations that regulates postal rates in our planet.

Why? Because Donald Trump has a:

1) Us vs Them Paranoid Mentality. 2) He wants to charge you a lot more for what you pay for mailing a small letter.

I remember very well what I was paying for a first class postage stamp when I arrived in the USA in 1961.

It was four cents for a one ounce letter.

Today we are paying fifty five cents per ounce.

Apparently, Trump has been, behind the scenes, saying that the People's Republic of China benefits by the rates of the UPU.

The article goes on to quote Mike Pompeo in his notification letter to the UPU.

He tells them that the USA is going to a “self-declared rate.” The article does not define that.

To me it means: charge what the traffic will bear, by extending capitalist greed to postage rates.

The effective date is October 17, 2019.

I predict that Trump and his “self-declared” postage rate will mean is that you will have to pay $10.00 per letter, or more. (insurance and 'tracking' will cost you a barrel full of more money.)

The new name of the U.S. Postal Service will be: “MAGA MAIL.”
